SUMMARY:B2 Hike: Cantilever Rock on Sunset Ridge Trail from Underhill State Park
DESCRIPTION:Distance: 1.9 miles (one-way) to Cantilever Rock from CCC Road\, 3.8 RT \n\n\n\nElevation gain: 1100 ft. \n\n\n\nHiking time: 2 ½ to 3 hours \n\n\n\nDeparture times: Leave South Burlington Hannaford’s at 9:20. \n\n\n\nLeave Market 32\, 90 Center Road\, Essex at 9:30.    We will start hiking at 10:00. \n\n\n\nDescription: From the parking lot\, follow the CCC road for about a mile to the intersection of Sunset Ridge Trail. Follow the Sunset Ridge Trail (left from the CCC road).  In about ½ mile look for a side trail out to Cantilever Rock.  It is about 0.1 mile away from the main trail. Cantilever Rock is a horizontal blade of rock 60 ft. above the ground wedged into the vertical face of a 100 ft. cliff. Great views from the Rock\, and a great place to eat lunch—if it’s dry.  Option: Hike further up Sunset Ridge Trail\, as far as the group agrees. \n\n\n\nDirections to Underhill State Park: Driving through Jericho and Underhill on Route 15\, turn right across from the Jolley convenience store onto River Road. SUMMARY:B1 Hike – Elmore Mountain Loop
DESCRIPTION:Time: 4½ hrs. or more—depending on our activity time\, plus driving; assembling etc. – so plan accordingly. \n\n\n\nDistance: 5.4 miles \n\n\n\nElev. Gain: 1\,466 ft.Description:  We will go up the shorter\, steeper Fire Tower Trail and down the longer Ridge Trail on this loop trail.  The fire tower provides a 360˚ view\, and we will have vistas at other points on the way up and down. The trail requires some scrambling up rocky sections on the steepest parts of the trail. \n\n\n\nFrom the trailhead\, we follow the fire access road to the Fire Tower Trail\, which begins with a steadily increasing grade. The trail is rocky and rooted. It climbs consistently until around 0.9 miles\, where it becomes steeper\, involving rocky stair ledges.  After the first steep section\, there will be a scenic viewpoint at the site of a former cabin site\, where the old foundation remains. \n\n\n\nPast the viewpoint\, the last leg has another steep section that leads straight to the trail junction between the Fire Tower Trail and the Ridge Trail. Instead of veering north on the Ridge Trail\, we will go south 0.1 miles to the Elmore Fire Tower.  You can climb to the top for a 360-degree panoramic view of Elmore State Park and the surrounding mountain ranges and valleys. \n\n\n\nAfter leaving the fire tower\, we will continue north on the Ridge Trail. The first section ebbs and flows as it gradually descends in elevation passing scenic overlooks and the Balancing Rock landmark. The trail becomes a little steeper near the end of the ridge but empties out into open forest. The remaining trail is an easy forest hike back to the fire access road leading back to the parking area. During the pre-hike we found the Ridge Trail to be particularly wet and muddy in several spots\, so waterproof hiking boots are recommended. \n\n\n\nBring insect repellent\, lunch\, water and snacks. Plan on eating at the top while we take turns going up the fire tower (4 or 5 at a time). \n\n\n\nPoles are helpful at times\, but a bit of a nuisance at times as well. There is a composting outhouse in the parking lot. The park is open for the season\, so bring your Green Mountain Pass or $5.00 for the entry fee. Swimming is a possibility for those who wish.  We may organize carpooling based upon interest in swimming. \n\n\n\nMeeting Places & Times:Meet at Richmond Park and Ride at 8:45 a.m. The park opens for day use at 10:00 a.m. If you plan on meeting the group at the park please arrive by 10:00 a.m. to then proceed to the trailhead parking. \n\n\n\nDriving Directions:From the Richmond Park and Ride\, take Rte. 2 E to I-89\, then I-89 south to exit 10\, Stowe\, and follow Rte. 100 north through Stowe and toward Morrisville for 18 miles.  Turn right onto Historic VT-100 N (right hand turn at a traffic light).  Continue to Rte. 12 south/Elmore Rd in Morrisville and then drive 3.9 mi. to 846 Rte. 12\, Elmore—Elmore State Park entrance.  Be careful on the road going to the parking lot—there may be some deep holes and water bars.
